Motion

The motion CLI

Control, inspect, update, and remove a connected box.

The native and Docker installs drop a motion command on your PATH. It's mode-aware — the same commands work whether the box runs in Docker or natively (and on native, whether it's managed by systemd or a plain process).

motion <command>

Commands

CommandWhat it does
motion statusRunning? Shows root, hub, version, and per-component health.
motion startStart the workspace.
motion stopStop it.
motion restartRestart it.
motion logsTail live logs (journalctl under systemd, otherwise the log file).
motion updateCheck the hub for a newer version and update in place (safe).
motion doctorFull health check: components, local IDE + hub reachability, updates.
motion openPrint the local IDE URL.
motion versionPrint the installed version.
motion uninstallStop everything and remove the install. Your files are untouched.

status

$ motion status
Motion: running  (systemd: system)  v0e61ac2
  root: /root
  hub:  wss://motionis.xyz
  components: daemon=1 caddy=1 agent=1

components makes a half-up box visible — if the daemon is alive but the agent is down, you'll see agent=0 instead of a misleading "running".

update

$ motion update
updating 0e61ac2 → a3b060f …
updated to a3b060f

update downloads the new bundle to a temp dir and atomically swaps it only on success — a failed download never breaks the working install. It picks the bundle matching your OS + arch automatically.

doctor

$ motion doctor
Motion doctor
  version:    a3b060f
  service:    systemd (system), active=active
  components: daemon=1 caddy=1 agent=1
  local IDE:  reachable on :41207
  hub:        reachable (https://motionis.xyz)

Start here when something's wrong — see Troubleshooting.

uninstall

motion uninstall

Stops the service, removes the systemd unit (if any) and ~/.motion, and deletes the CLI. Your own files are left untouched. The workspace still appears in your dashboard — delete it there too if you're done.

On Docker installs, motion wraps the container (docker start/stop/logs); motion update tells you to re-run the install line to pull the latest image. On Windows, control is via the bundle directly (see Windows).
